While U.S. President Donald Trump has faced global scrutiny in recent months over escalating tensions with Iran - a geopolitical standoff that disrupted global oil markets and burdened consumers worldwide - he has unexpectedly become the center of attention on Bangladeshi social media for a vastly different reason.

As the Muslim festival of Eid al-Adha approaches, Bangladesh’s bustling livestock markets are preparing for their annual surge in trade. It is a local tradition for farmers to give their most prized sacrificial animals grandiose names to attract buyers. This year, the undisputed star of the pre-holiday season is a 700-kilogram buffalo named ‘Donald Trump’.

The moniker is not merely a marketing gimmick. The buffalo possesses a striking physical trait: a tuft of long, blonde hair falling across its forehead that bears a remarkable resemblance to the American leader’s signature coiffure. Social media users have been quick to point out the uncanny likeness, overwhelmingly agreeing that the name is perfectly fitting.

The buffalo became an internet sensation after the local broadcaster News24 aired a segment on it on May 10. The video has since amassed over 10 million views on Facebook, drawing more than 600,000 reactions and 20,000 comments.

‘‘I am amazed. It's an 80 percent match with Donald Trump. How is this possible?’’ wrote one user, SK Badsha Mohidul. Another user, Md Mukul Miah, joked: ‘‘The face is an exact match with the name. The farmer deserves a Nobel Prize.’’ A third user, Md Swadhin, added, ‘‘I am so surprised, how did the appearance match so perfectly!’’

Housed at Rabeya Agro Farm in the Paikpara neighborhood of Narayanganj, just outside the capital, the buffalo stands out not just for its hair, but for its unusual pinkish complexion.

Ziauddin Mridha, the farm’s owner, told The Dissent that the animal is a rare albino variant. ‘‘My younger brother was the first to notice the resemblance of its golden-reddish forelock to Donald Trump's hair,’’ Mr. Mridha said. ‘‘Since then, the buffalo has simply been known as Trump.’’

According to the breeders, the animal exhibits a ‘royal’ demeanor befitting its high-profile name. It is pampered with a specialized diet that includes corn, soybean meal, wheat bran, and other nutritional supplements alongside regular grass.

Curious onlookers have been flocking to the farm to catch a glimpse of the celebrity bovine. However, prospective buyers are already out of luck. ‘‘Because of his name and unique look, a buyer booked the buffalo even before we could take him to the market,’’ Mr. Mridha noted.

Flamboyant naming is a staple of Bangladesh's seasonal cattle markets, where breeders routinely christen their livestock with titles like Lion, King, Emperor, and Prince to draw crowds.

Nor is this the first time the American politician has inspired the local livestock trade. In 2020, a farmer in the northwestern district of Chapainawabganj sold a Holstein Friesian bull named ‘Donald Trump’ for 169,000 taka. The farmer, Mehedi Hasan, cited his personal admiration for the U.S. president and the bull's perceived facial similarities as the inspiration behind the name.
