Several X (formerly Twitter) accounts operated from India have been circulating claims that a Hindu youth named Kamdeb Das was beaten to death by “Islamist extremists” in Habiganj, Bangladesh.

Some of the posts making this claim can be seen here, here, here, and here.

However, The Dissent has found no evidence supporting this claim. In fact, responsibility for the killing has not yet been established, and police are continuing their investigation to determine who was involved.

Two media reports related to the incident can be found here and here.

Following the incident, a report published by Dhaka Mail stated that the killing may have occurred due to a romantic relationship.

According to the victim’s elder brother, Jubaraj Das, Kamdeb had been in a relationship with the daughter of Shankar Das, a resident of the same area. On Sunday evening (December 21), tensions between the two families escalated into an argument and a confrontation. Kamdeb went missing later that night. Family members searched various places but could not locate him, and his mobile phone was switched off.

Akbar Hossain, the officer-in-charge of Ajmiriganj police station, told The Dissent: “There is no religious angle involved in this incident. Kamdeb’s family has filed a case, and the family named in the case is also Hindu. Essentially, Kamdeb Das had a romantic relationship with a girl, which led to a dispute between the two families. There was even an arbitration after the altercation. The following day, his body was found in a pond. We also found a rope hanging from a tree beside the pond. Our investigation is ongoing.”

Therefore, claims circulating online that link Islamist groups to this killing have not been substantiated.
