Indian Propaganda Website Falsely Claims ‘50 July Martyrs Are Still Alive’
On April 13, the Indian propaganda website Northeast News published a report titled “The mystery behind 9th Infantry Division’s inaction on August 4, 2024” focusing on Bangladesh’s July mass uprising. The report was written by senior journalist Enayet Kabir.
In one section, the report states: “The interim government of Muhammad Yunus revised a list of approximately 800 people several times. About 50 individuals from the revised list were later found to be alive.”
The claim suggests that 50 individuals listed as martyrs in the July uprising were later identified as alive.
However, a review by The Dissent found no evidence to support this assertion.
According to the Ministry of Liberation War Affairs, a gazette published on January 15, 2025, officially recognized 834 individuals as martyrs of the July uprising. On June 10 of the same year, the ministry issued another gazette adding 10 more names to the list.
Later, on August 3, 2025, the interim government released a revised gazette removing eight names from the list. A report published by Prothom Alo noted that four of those names had appeared twice in the gazette, while the remaining four individuals were not directly involved in the July movement.
Separately, a Prothom Alo report on September 15, 2025, stated that 52 individuals had been included in the martyrs’ list despite not qualifying as such.
Even so, there has been no indication that any person listed as a martyr was later found to be alive. No such allegations have been formally raised with the relevant authorities.
Dr. Md. Matiur Rahman, a deputy secretary at the Ministry of Liberation War Affairs overseeing the July uprising affairs, told The Dissent: “We have never found any information suggesting that someone listed as a July martyr is alive. No one has made such a complaint.”
